Black Mountain Picks. Are they a non-essential component? This the first thing that I had to ask myself. I have played with some best picks available. Normally, my “go to” pick is made by Fender or Dunlop. However, I have been reading a lot of some items that seem to be non-essential for improving guitar skills. I have read articles that EVH used to hold a pick a certain way that will give him an edge over most guitarists. I was kind of dumb founded as to why this was the case.
Eddie Van Halen had a unique way of holding a guitar pick, using his thumb, index finger, and middle finger, like holding a pen. He said that this was comfortable for him, even though it's traditionally incorrect. When using the vibrato bar, he would hold the pick with his thumb and index finger.
Which gave way to other techniques such as Tremolo Picking and picking involving more the wrist. Both would give him the upper hand on how quickly he could play. I knew that there was a right and wrong way to hold a pick. However, it isn’t as straight forward as it sounds. Though my guitar teach would tell me otherwise. With all the components that I want to test, I had to focus my attention on the smaller unique items that sometimes go unnoticed. However, they end up being crucial to your performance and playing style.
Therefore, it brings me to my review of Black Mountain Picks. Visually, I imagined them being used with a banjo. I had some other subtle thoughts about coordination, and needing a brace around your thumb to enable a firm grip. Immediately, I grabbed the Black Mountain picks and started playing. I was surprised and how comfortable they felt. It was like an extension of my thumb without limitations. The introduction from the pamphlet said that you would need an initiation period of at least 50 hours. Honestly, I wasn’t going to spend 50 hours on pick just to feel comfortable with it. Either it fits or it doesn’t. Afterall, I am not trying on a pair of shoes.

Black Mountain Picks also offers FREE Thumb Pick Courses. Honestly, I didn’t need to watch them. I was extremely comfortable with the picks right out of the box. Even for someone who has never used a thumb pick before. I was also impressed on how they were constructed. A basic set of thumb picks will cost you 26.45 for the variety pack. Since reviewing Black Mountain Picks, I haven’t used anything else. Will that change? Probably. Only because I am always looking to try new gear. I want to congratulation Black Mountain Picks for thinking outside the box. I am certain that I will never drop a pick again while using them. One thing that is interesting, is that they are not made for just acoustic guitars. You can also use them for your electric guitars. These picks are versatile, and you should pick some up today. I guarantee that you will not be disappointed. Time to open your world by using Black Mountain Picks.
