To the Nines is an idiom meaning "to perfection" or "to the highest degree". You hear it in the English language as “dressed to the nines”.

In casual conversation the phrase “to the nines” or “dress to the nines” seems like another trendy word that is overused. However, this phrase that has become another cliché was once dubbed as one of the highest honors for someone with great style and fashion sense. In some outlets, it still takes on great meaning. Often in a more traditional or formal attire. Take a moment to consider the meaning. It mentions, perfection or to the highest degree. Understandably, “to the nines” is not applicable to every situation. We don’t often sit at home with concerns about how we are dressed. Normally the more comfortable we are the better. Especially if we are binging on any number of streaming platforms. On other occasions, such as a night on the town, or a special event, were going to ensure we are dressed to impress. Our focus on how we are dressed becomes extremely important. Afterall, the impression that we convey could send positive or negative signals to those we plan on engaging.

Dressing to the nines, doesn’t mean that you must dress formally. It does mean, that you must dress to the highest degree possible. Depending upon your environment or occasion. “To the nines” has just become a trendy word used without any forethought to its meaning or value. Unfortunately, it has affected professionals within the entertainment industry. I understand that each facet of the entertainment industry calls for a specific look or dress. However, there are artists or entertainers that completely miss the mark. I see it all the time. It is kind of sad that some assume that being a great artist is the only key to success. The way you dress, should never take a back seat. In fact, planning on an outfit that is “to the nines” is as important as planning your next stage plot. *

* A stage plot is a graphic representation that illustrates a band or performers setup for when they perform live which indicates their placement on stage, what gear they use, and other helpful information.

I believe it was in May of 2023 when I connected with Sherri Lu of Riot Stitch Rockwear. Her name was worn by some of the top tier rockers in the entertainment industry. It was extremely important to me go get her insight into a similar topic. The interview was entitled “Dressing the part with Riot Stitch Rockwear. Avoiding a disconnect.”

Sherri spoke about Riot Stich Rockwear and how different they are from other brands. She mentioned “When I moved to LA about 20 years ago, I was surprised at how hard it was to find cool clothes that fit me.” Riot Stitch Rockwear is “gear centric”. Rockwear tailored to meet the needs of each any artist. Riot Stitch Rockwear should outlast the musical journey of any rocker!

The clothing line designed by Sherri Lu is “To the nines”. Its rock wear, not formal wear.

INTERVIEW WITH SHERRI LU AND GUITAR THRILLS MAGAZINE

Guitar Thrills: Hi Sherri, thank you for joining us again. Unfortunately, it has been too long since your last interview us. However, we have had an opportunity to collaborate on many occasions. You continue grow into a house-hold name. Riot Stitch Rockwear is now a clothing line that rockers and artists consider first as they prepare to “dress to the nines”.

Guitar Thrills: I mentioned in the introduction the topic “to the nines”, which reflects your fashion sense or style. Do you believe this only applies to performing within the entertainment industry, or are there other opportunities where this would be applicable?

Sherri: Hi Edward, always great to connect with you and catch you up on what's happening with Riot Stitch. Hmm, I think my line is right for any situation where being impeccably dressed or presenting yourself with a distinctive ‘Rock n Roll Style’ is the goal. Whether on stage, backstage, in the crowd, on the red carpet, on a night out on the town, or just hanging with friends and family. My clients have said it’s a refreshing break from ‘everyday’ clothes, and I take pride in helping them shine. You could say “Riot Stitch – Designs to the Nines” haha. I’m just grateful that my work is appreciated and desired.

Guitar Thrills: As a custom clothing designer, there must be a background to show your ability to design or create a clothing line. What kind of education do you have, that has enabled you to design such a successful brand of rockwear?

Sherri: My major was international trade and English literature. Haha – nothing at all to do with fashion.  I have to say my mom was the biggest early influence on my fashion sense – she would make clothes for me as far back as I can remember. I think when I was 5 or 6 she took me to the fabric store and we picked out fabric together for my birthday dress. She told me to draw it the way I wanted, and then she made it exactly like my sketch! I was so mesmerized by her skills. Then a few years later in middle school, I got completely corrupted by some friends and became a total rock and roll lover. The rest is history!

Guitar Thrills: You mentioned previously, that the “I was surprised at how hard it was to find cool clothes that fit me.” Was this your only incentive for creating a clothing line?

Sherri: That wasn’t the only reason, but for sure it sparked the desire to create my own designs. My super picky fashion style had a lot to do with it, too. When I see something on the rack or on display in a store, there is ALWAYS something I would like to see done differently – that’s when I knew I had to start making clothes myself.

Guitar Thrills: Why design clothing for the Rock genre? Is there other genres of music that you would like to cater to?

Sherri: Rock n Roll is my favorite genre; I love the music, the spirit, the attitude, everything about it – especially the fashion! I think I would like to breathe some new life into the classic 70s and 80s styles, or at least give it a try. And I for sure like the victorian styles, you can probably see a bit of that in some of my designs. I also love 60's flower child / hippy feel. I’ve always liked a lot of pop music, and since my daughter is into K-pop, that might be something I may try to incorporate into my designs. Sounds like a little bit of everything, haha!

Guitar Thrills: What has been the reason for your success thus far?

Sherri: I’d like to think it’s my personal touch and attention to detail. I love what I do, so I try to make every design a masterpiece and treat every client like the rock stars they are to me.

Guitar Thrills: Who are some of the names that you have created outfits for?

Sherri: My glam favorite is Steel Panther, and I’ve loved designing for them over the past few years. They’re a perfect fit for my style, and working with them has helped take my brand to a whole new level. They are just the best guys to work with. I’ve designed for Ace Frehley (KISS), on my metal side I’ve done pieces for Philip Shouse and Wolf Hoffmann (Accept), Mikkey Dee (Scorpions), Keith St John (Montrose), Gus G, Jack Gibson(Exodus), Kiki Wong (Smashing Pumpkins), and Mike Fitz (Bad Marriage).  I also work with a lot of well-known national tribute bands like Led Zeppagain, Van Halen tribute bands Atomic Punks, and Completely Unchained… and the list goes on.

Guitar Thrills: What kind of feedback have you received regarding your unique style?

Sherri; My client return rate is around 90%, for which I am super grateful. My clients tell me they LOVE the fit, the colors, the high quality, and the detail I put into their designs.

Guitar Thrills: There are other brands that cater to artists in the music industry. What makes Riot Stitch different?

Sherri: Riot Stitch’s Distinctive Aesthetic and Cultural Connection. I have a deep affection for the rock n roll culture. I draw inspiration from iconic musicians, album artwork, concert visuals, or even specific sub-genres within rock music, creating designs that resonate with artists and fans on a deeper level. I think my genuine connection to rock n roll history and focus on style and heritage set my line apart from others.

Guitar Thrills: To have longevity in the fashion industry, you must look ahead for your next product or offering. What does that process look like to you?

Sherri: I’ve always got one eye on current fashion trends, but I don’t let them influence my work. When looking forward I explore new silhouettes, and experiment with new lines and cuts, colors and prints. I push the limits of the “now”, to help me come up with the “next”. All while staying true to rock & roll, that is, true to Riot Stitch.

Guitar Thrills: Are you open to advice or opinions regarding your designs?

Sherri: Always. I have very creative clients. Musicians are artists and most already have their own ideas when we meet, so that’s great. Sometimes we even do the designs together; it's a fun experience and inspiring for me as well.

Guitar Thrills: How are you able to be competitive in pricing? Especially with a high quality of materials and design?

Sherri: A strong brand reputation for quality encourages client loyalty. Repeat business and word-of-mouth are working very well for me, and since advertising costs are very low, I can pass those savings to my clients with artist discounts and VIP services – I like to keep my clients happy. I’ve been able to maintain the highest standard of quality, while keeping the costs within reach of almost everyone. I could easily justify a higher price point, but I’d rather keep creating unique and distinctive, out-of-this-world designs, and keep the prices down to earth. Those are some reasons Riot Stitch can offer the all-around style and value that others just can’t.

Guitar Thrills: What makes your company unique?

Sherri:  Avant-guard ‘riot’ styles, and infusing unexpected design elements that challenge traditional rock n roll fashion norms. Riot Stitch appeals to fashion-forward consumers. I only use the highest-quality fabric and hardware, and my meticulous craftsmanship during production ensures perfect fit and maximum comfort.  Last but not least, I release limited editions and one-offs that cater to collectors or individuals seeking exclusivity in their wardrobe.

Guitar Thrills: Is Riot Stitch only offered in the U.S. or do you have international clients?

Sherri: International for sure, I have clients in UK, Belgium, France, Sweden, recently added Norway, Australia, Germany, South America… and the list keeps growing.

Guitar Thrills: Why should an artist or entertainer, choose Riot Stitch over the other brands out there? (provide a selling point)

Sherri: Riot Stitch embodies an authentic connection to rock n roll. My designs are not just clothing but a statement of identity and rebellion. Clients can contribute to the entire process, ensuring a unique, custom piece that showcases who they are – and that really resonates with their audience. Riot Stitch is committed to honoring the essence of rock music through apparel. That’s what Riot Stitch does best.

Riot Stitch offers exclusive limited editions that artists can leverage to create buzz and exclusivity. In other words, if you request your own custom design you will have one-of-one.

Guitar Thrills: I want to thank you for taking the time to answer some questions. It has been a pleasure to collaborate with you over the years. The proof of value always appears at the end of production. The results of your custom rockwear are apparent. Every artist I have seen that wears Riot Stitch looks amazing. Undoubtedly, they are dressed to the nines. Perfection.apes in their open positions. Happy playing!
